The “Danakil,” or “Dallol” depression, which encompasses a good portion of the eastern part of the Tigray region, is one of the earth’s hottest and most inhospitable places. The other most striking gift of nature to Ethiopia is the “Erta Ale” active volcano mountain located very close to the Danakil depression in the Afar region.
After breakfast head to Awash. En route visit the Crater lakes of Debre-Zeit. Late in the evening have safari in the Awash national Park. Admire the bird life, the Awash River falls and also the Awash gorge in the park
Have a morning visit to the Palm spring and also the warthogs with in the palm spring and then drive to Semera, the capital city for the Afar people
Drive from Semera to Afdera. En route admire the volcanic rock and scenery of the desert. Up on arrival visit the salt extraction process on Lake Afdera
Drive from Afdera to Dodom or Kusreyat. In the evening trek up to the mountains to visit the active volcano of Erta’ale which is one of the few volcano in the world with dramatic scene
Trek back to Dodom and drive to Dallol, the lowest point on earth. Admire the scenery of this great land carpeted with the sulphure surface
Visit to the lake Assale, another salt lake and situated between the border of Ethiopia and Djibouti.
Drive from Dallol to Mekelle. En route visit the camel caravan and the spectacular scenery of the road
Drive back to Kombolcha. en route admire the mountain chains at Ambalage and also visit to Hayq Estefanos monastery (open only for men) and the Palace of Ras Mikael Sihul in Desse
Drive back to Addis Ababa. En route admire the mouth of Rift Valley system at Tarmaber and the lush- land of the Shoan Plateau. In the evening be taken to traditional restaurant where you can see live traditional dancing show and transfer to airport for departure
What a spectacular trip to the Omo! Our driver and guide were excellent - knowledgeable, safe driving, always watching over us, thoughtful, and fun! Considering the remote locations I had expected very poor accommodations and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the lodges were. The villages we visited were fascinating. I could not believe my eyes -- so many different tribes. These were not some "tourist villages" -- this was the real thing. What an incredible trip we had seeing these wonderful sights. As a couple of seasoned travelers who are older we did research our trip about Ethiopia and decided to spend our time with Off Road Travel. We were delighted and not disappointed. We covered the historical north, the cultural east and the Omo valley all in 26 tough but fascinating days. Our driver/guide Fitsum was a caring person as well as a good mechanic who could fix anything and on occasion did. He deferred to the local guides when appropiate but we knew he was equally knowledgeable as they were. We decided to drive the whole way, not take the air route for any segment. The benefits of seeing up close and personal the people, landscape and villages far out weighted the rough roads and the ever present dust. Yes there is dust but if they keep putting asphalt down as saw them doing it should get better in the future. We recommend the Off Road trips. Read more
