Mount Kilimanjaro, standing at 5,895 metres, is indeed the Roof of Africa. It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world and highest peak on the African continent and yet its summit is accessible by most well-prepared trekkers with a good level of fitness. Six routes up to the summit will take a climber through four ecological zones and breathtaking scenery from the lush montane forest to the scrub covered moorlands to the rocky alpine desert and finally onto the barren summit of snow and ice.

ITINERARY

Arusha Town

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport a Hazina Afrika transfer representative will be waiting outside the secured area to warmly welcome you to Tanzania. The road transfer to your hotel in Arusha will be approximately one hour.

1 Night at Ilboru Lodge

Mti Mkubwa

Pick up from Ilboru Safari Lodge at 8am and head to Londrossi Gate with the porters, guide and cook who will spend the next eight days trekking with you to Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa. The drive through coffee farms and villages to Londrossi Gate takes about 2 hours. Once you arrive, you will wait at the gate while we register your climb as the porters and guides make final preparations. Your first day's destination is Mti Mkubwaor Big Tree Camp. Each day, porters and cook will walk ahead to set up the camp in time for your arrival. On this first day,you will hike through the moss covered trees of Kilimanjaro's beautiful cloud forest. Shira 1

The forest will begin to thin mid-morning as you hike and the vegetation will change to include heathers, tall grasses and wildflowers as you pass into the moorlands and get your first glimpse of Shira Plateau. If it’s a clear day, you will also be able to see snow-capped Kibo in the distance with the next two days trekking mapped out before you in the well worn trails etched into the plateau. Read more

1 Night at Shira 1 Camp

Shira 2

Today is a long trek across the plateau to the foot of Shira Cathedral standing at 3,862 m. It’s a steep but short hike to the summit and the views on a clear day are breathtaking. From Shira Cathedral head northeast across the East Shira Hills. Once you hit the helipad and road head used for emergency rescues, it’s only another 45 minutes to Shira 2 Camp. Read more

1 Night at Shira 2 Camp

Barranco

Although this up and down day ends with an elevation gain of only about 100 meters, by early afternoon you will have climbed to a height of 4,627 meters before beginning your descent to Barranco Camp. This day is crucial for acclimatization. After breakfast, hike east on the Shira Plateau before reaching the junction for the Shira and Machame Routes. Continue on through the barren landscape before stopping for lunch. Shortly after lunch, reach the highest point of the day before descending quickly to Barranco Camp. Barranco Camp, set among stands of Senecio Kilimanjari is considered to be the most scenic camp site on the Lemosho route. Read more

Karanga Valley

Leave Barranco Camp after breakfast for Karanga Valley. The day begins with a 1.5 hours scramble up Barranco Wall. This is the hardest part of the day and in some places you will have to use your hands to pull your body up. After reaching the top make a short descent into the greener Karanga Valley. We generally camp on the ridge above the valley to allow for greater acclimatization. Read more

Barafu

After breakfast, begin the hike to Barafu Camp. On the way to Barafu, view several of Kibo's glaciers as well as the junction that connects the descent route, Mweka, with the Lemosho trail. Hike by the Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. Although the trail to Barafu passes through alpine desert with little vegetation, Barafu Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Try to sleep as soon as you finish dinner as you will be woken before midnight for your summit hike. Read more

Mweka Hut

Around midnight, begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. For the next six hours you will hike by the light of your headlamp. The ascent to the crater rim is the most challenging part of the entire trek. The trail is very steep until you reach the crater rim at Stella Point. Despite the distance being relatively short, progress is slow - there is less than half the oxygen than at sea level! The hike from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, as far as hikes go, not very difficult. The altitude, however, makes the hike long and tiring. The crater rim hike takes approximately one hour. Upon reaching Uhuru, take photos of your guide and group at the peak before beginning the descent to Mweka Camp. On the way down from Uhuru, enjoy views of the mountain, crater, clouds and glaciers. At Barafu Camp, eat breakfast and take a short break. You still have another three to five hours to go before reaching Mweka Camp. Read more

Arusha Town

After breakfast, finish the trek with a descent to Mweka Gate. Your last hike on Kilimanjaro is a beautiful one, passing through Kilimanjaro's cloud forest. Watch your step during the descent, as the trail can be slippery. Our vehicle will be waiting at the lower station of Mweka Gate to take you back to Arusha. Dinner and overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport the following day to catch your return flight home. Read more
