You leave the glades of the rain-forest and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo Huts. Views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo are amazing. Look for giant lobelias and groundsels. You may begin to feel the effects of the altitude. • Elevation: 2700m/8875ft to 3700m/12,200ft • Distance: 12km/7.5mi • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Habitat: Heathland • Meals: BLD • Budget Lodging: Horombo Hut Read more
Rest day at Horombo Hut with optional hike by Mawenzi Peak. • Meals: BLD • Budget Lodging: Horombo Hut
Ascending, we now pass the last watering point, walking onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Vegetation begins with upper heath-land but then disappears into “moonscape”. Dinner, rest, and prepare for summit climb. • Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 4700m/15,500ft • Distance: 9km/5.5mi • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours • Habitat: Alpine Desert • Meals: BLD • Budget Lodging: Kibo Hut Read more
Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), commence the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman’s point located on the crater rim. Continuing, we now ascend to Uhuru Peak, which is the highest point in Africa. There are unbelievable views at every turn. Have your picture taken at the summit to show your friends and family. From here we descend, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing on to the Horombo Huts. The beginning of this climb is done in the dark and requires headlamps or flashlights. It will be very cold until you start descending, so you will need all of your warm layers. This is by far the most difficult part of the trek with many switchbacks. Going slowly “pole pole” and an optimistic attitude will get you there! • Elevation: 4700m/15,500ft to 5895m/19,340ft • Down to 3700m/12,200ft • Distance: 6km/4mi up / 15km/9mi down • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours up / 15km/9mi down • Habitat: Alpine Desert • Meals: BLD • Budget Lodging: Horombo Hut Read more
After breakfast, a steady descent takes us down through moorland to the Mandara Hut. Continue descending through lush forest path to the National Park gate at Marangu. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. Gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy). Tanzania Joy Tours vehicle will meet you at Marangu gate to drive you back to your hotel in Moshi (about 1 hour). • Elevation: 3700m/12,200ft to 1700m/5500ft • Distance: 20km/12.5mi • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours • Habitat: Forest • Meals: B Read more
We had a fantastic trek with GoToMountKenya, they represent excellent value, and were very caring towards us. Climbing the mountain is possible for the moderately fit, although be aware that it is possible to have problems with the altitude, and you need time to acclimatise. The food was excellent and plentiful, and the guide Zack and his team of porters, Sampson, 2 David's, and Anthony were hard working, friendly and respectful. The ascent up Chogoria is not to be missed and utterly beautiful with varied landscape, birdlife, and amazing plants. It was emotional making it to the summit, and the view is spectacular. The descent down Sirimon was a long slog on the final day when the adrenaline of reaching the summit has worn off, especially as we had rain. Zack clearly loves Mount Kenya, and showed us some great sites including a wonderful waterfall A big thank you to the team that supported us on the trek and gave us an unforgettable experience. My partner was unable to make the summit, but felt very well looked after and also really enjoyed the challenge of this special trip. Read more
Unforgettable trek thanks to a utmost professional and friendly team! Together with a local resident, my girlfriend and I climbed Mt. Kenya via the Sirimon - Chogoria route. Despite two initial days marked with rain, this trek proved unforgettable and this was in great part the merit of the Equitorial Star Adventure team (beyond Duncan, as manager and head guide, our team consisted of Patrick as guide, Eldad as cook, James, Godfry, and Benson as porters, whom I all want to thank again for their dedication). Always ready to adapt to their maximise our experience, this team was ready with insight when requested (detailed information about animals and plants in the park, but also ready to engage in convrsations about Kenya as a country) and regulary took the initiative to solve problems before they occurred (our befriended third member was a trek beginner and the team suggested rapidly to split up in two accompanied groups to avoid tensions due to different walking paces). Another example of their creativeness: they proved to be the only team having thought of a brasero to help us warming up after walking in the rain. Finally, after concluding the trek under a most welcome sun, they also made sure we got to the airport in time for our plane, with a few ripe Kenyan mango's to prolong the pleasure of our stay in Kenya despite the return to the European winter. I trekked to Lenana peak in December with a friend - organised by Equatorial Star Safaris. Duncan (the owner) was brilliant; very accommodative and quick to respond to emails. His team were definitely the most cheerful of all the groups doing the climb. I highly recommend using his company and I shall certainly use them for future trips in the region Read more
