Borneo is surrounded by the South China Sea to the north and northwest, the Sulu Sea to the northeast, the Celebes Sea and the Makassar Strait to the east, and the Java Sea and Karimata Strait to the south. MONGKOS BIDAYUH LONGHOUSE DAY TRIP + LOCAL LUNCH After breakfast, 0800hrs Meet at hotel lobby and depart to Mongkos Bidayuh village which is located near the Sarawak- Kalimantan border. Along the way, stop at the colorful native market in the small town of Serian (optional) where a variety of jungle produce such as edible ferns, bamboo shoots and tropical fruits are on display. Arrive at Mongkos around 1100 hours. Upon arrival visit the 24-door traditional longhouse which is made of wood and bamboo and was built in the 1950s. Take a short tour and learn about the history of the longhouse, including stories from the ‘Confrontation’, the undeclared war between Malaysia and Indonesia that ran from 1962-1966. Then enjoy a Bidayuh- style lunch. After lunch take a tour of the village, meet local villagers and learn about the Bidayuh way of life. After touring the village, go on a guided walk through nearby farmland like rice, pepper, rubber, oil palm, rambutan, bananas, jackfruit, durian and a range of local vegetables are all grown in the small farms that surround the village. 1530-1400 hours depart the village and return to Kuching. After breakfast, 0830hrs Meet at hotel lobby and depart for Bako National Park, the oldest national park which offers the perfect introduction of Sarawak forest and wildlife. It can be reached by 30 minutes drive and followed by 30 minutes boat ride. The park has on area of 16sq km of primary forest with abundance of botanical treasure making of 25 types of vegetation. Amongst this plant life is the strange carnivorous pitcher plant. Bako’s mangrove forest is home to the proboscis monkeys, only found in Borneo. Some species like the long-tailed macaques, silver leaf monkey, monitor lizards and bear pig can easily see. Take a jungle trekking to park trails. Lunch at park canteen. DEPARTURE / ARRIVAL MULU / LANG’S CAVE / DEER CAVE / BATS EXODUS After breakfast, free at own leisure until transfer to the Kuching International Airport for departure flight to Mulu National Park. Meet and greet by our personnel in Mulu Airport for transfer to your accommodation for check-in. In the afternoon proceed to Park Headquarters for registration and take 3.8km walk on elevated plank walk to explore the Hidden Secrets of Lang Cave and the largest cave passage in the world called Deer Cave. If the weather permitted then we can wait for the quite phenomenal exodus of bats out from the caves entrance in search for insects. PENAN SETTLEMENT / WIND CAVE / CLEARWATER CAVE After breakfast at around 0830hrs, your guide would meet you and proceed with wooden open long boat up streams of Melinau River with stopover at Penan Settlement. The guide would give some commentary about this tribe. Back to the boat and further up to explore Wind Cave known for beautiful formation of caves speleothems. About 500m away is the Clearwater Caves, the longest underground river system in Southeast Asia with a total length of almost 200km. After explore both caves then you can take a dip at Clearwater Spring to rejuvenate before having your refreshment and local picnic lunch before heading back to your accommodation for overnight.
