Head westward via scenic roads along the Naukluft mountains to Sesriem just outside the Namib Naukluft National Park and gateway to some of the highest sand dunes in the world. If time permits, you can visit the Sesriem Canyon near the gate of the park. Or enjoy a local activity at your lodge and get ready for the next day to explore Sossusvlei. Read more
We recommend an early departure to catch the spectacular dawn lighting at Dune 45. Then you continue deeper into the Namib Naukluft Park to explore Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. And if you are feeling adventurous, try climbing the immense dunes - no easy feat!
Your self drive Namibia tour continues north with a must stop at Solitaire for a refuel - and of course, a taste of the famous apple pie! Then cross the the Gaub and Kuiseb Passes and continue via Ganab and Tinkas through spectacular scenery to the C28 (you will need to get a permit at Sesriem before departure). If time permits, you can take a small detour to admire the ancient Welwitschia plants and Moon Landscape before continuing on to the quaint coastal town of Swakopmund. We highly recommend the morning 4 - 4.5 hour seal and dolphin boat or catamaran cruise. This is an unforgettable experience on excellent boats/catamarans and can also be enjoyed in combination with a 4x4 excursion to Sandwich Harbour.
Another excellent morning activity is the “Living Desert Tour” which explores the “Little 5” in the dunes just south of Swakopmund. The tour lasts about 4.5 – 5 hours. Other great activities, depending on your interests, are quadbiking, sandboarding tandem skydiving, cultural tours, and more. Depart Swakopmund and head up the Skeleton coast to visit the Cape Cross Seal Colony (if desired). Then continue your self drive Namibia tour inland to the Twyfelfontein area. The safari ventures deeper into this remote area in search of the black rhino, which has adapted itself so well in this arid landscape, even feeding on the poisonous endemic Euphorbia Damarana bushes. The safari ends back at Palmwag with a guided hike. Continue northward in your hire vehicle to Khowarib with an optional stop to view the Ongongo Rapids and get ready for the Hoanib excursion the following day.
Enjoy a full day Hoanib excursion dry riverbed. This area has abundance of game such as desert giraffe, oryx, springbok, baboons and, of course, the famous Hoanib desert elephants. Learn about the local Himba culture in the morning, relax at the pool and then enjoy a hike up to a great sundowner spot along the river bank.
Head back south towards the westernmost gate of the Etosha National Park, Galton Gate. Overnight nearby in the beautiful Hobatere Concession are with its rich diversity of game. This area offers a huge variety of game such as Hartmann’s Zebra, giraffe, lion, elephant etc. Hobatere Lodge offers game drives during the day and at night, as well as guided walks. Or simply relax at one of the hides near the pool or at the nearby waterhole. Read more
Enter the Etosha National Park via Galton Gate and continue via Otjovasandu and Dolomietpunt to the rest camp, Okaukuejo. Here you have a good chance to see black rhino and other game at the waterhole. Exit the park before sundown at Andersson Gate and check in at nearby accomodation.
Plan a leisurely game drive from waterhole to waterhole through eastern Etosha. Lunch at Halali, then continue east to exit at Von Lindequist gate before sundown.
This area of Etosha National Park has a higher concentration of predators including cheetah, leopard and lion. We therefore recommend planning an early morning game drive into the park for your best chance of sighting these wild predators. Relax at the lodge in the afternoon.
The journey heads southeast via Otjiwarongo to the Waterberg Plateau area with optional en route stops at Lake Otjikoto, Tsumeb town and museum and the Hoba Meteorite near Grootfontein.
Hike up to the top of the plateau in the morning for spectacular views. Enjoy a game drive in the afternoon in search of rhino and other wildlife.
Head back to Windhoek to return your hire car (allow at least one hour for handover). You will then be transferred out to the airport for return your flight home.
