Departure between 4.30 and 6.00 (time depends on the vehicle and the season) from the hotel towards the Tatio. You will arrive at the perfect time to admire the sunrise and the geysers roaring in the cold air of the Altiplano. The valley looks like a giant pot. Water spurts here and there. This geological curiosity mixes a ground still frozen with boiling hot clear water springs (70°C/160°F). Observation of numerous volcanic formations. After a few hours, return to San Pedro via the Machuca Valley. Leave in the afternoon for the Puritama hot springs, whose waters come directly from the Tatio Geysers. They're composed of 8 pools of different sizes and temperatures. Leaving San Pedro, a steep road up the Altiplano takes you to the border post of Hito Cajón, entry point of Lipez region. Departure at 09:00am from San Pedro. After a steep ascent to the Altiplano we will pass to the border post of Hito Cajón, the entry point to the Lipez area. We will arrive to the Laguna Verde, below the volcanoes Juriques and Licancabur (el. 5960 m.a.s.l.) by midday and see there the curious phenomenon of the wind changing the color of the Laguna Verde into a spectacular emerald color. After crossing the Dali Desert (which indeed looks like one of his paintings) we will follow the Laguna Salada and stop at the thermal pools of Polques. Visit of the Sol de Mañana Geysers (el. 4850 m.a.s.l.) a volcanic crater with sulfuric fumes and heavy water. At the end of the day we will arrive to the Laguna Colorada. The intense red-brick color of this lagoon is due to the light sensitive phytoplancton present in its water. Going north along the Chilean border on the scenic “route of the Jewels” which name is due to all the lagoons along its way: lagunas Honda, Ch’arkota, Hedionda, Cañapa, sanctuary for 3 flamingoes species. Stop at the mirador of the volcano Ollague which is still active and contains one of the world’s highest open pit copper mines. The track then descends from 4200 to 3600 meters of altitude. A 2-hour trip from San Pedro will take us to the Salar de Uyuni (el. 3650 m.a.s.l.). The atmosphere is special: the horizon seems to not have any limits and the immensity is overwhelming. We head north to the island of Incahuasi. This island of volcanic origin is covered with stromatolites (fossilized bacteria representing the first traces of life on earth) and giant cacti. On the way we visit the “Cave of the Galaxy” and its stalactites resembling lace. In the afternoon, we head west towards Colchani, where we visit the salt exploitations. Cold lunch. All included.
