Dubrovnik

Good morning! Today, we left almost the entire day at your leisure, so you could rest from yesterday’s exhausting flights and so you could prepare for experiences that lie ahead. Your hotel features a private outdoor pool area, spa and wellness area and terrace restaurant & bar. In the afternoon, when the crowds from cruise ships subside, you will meet your expert-guide, one of the best guides in Dubrovnik and during your walking tour of Dubrovnik, learn about the exiting heritage of this miraculous place. A unique city tour will give you the opportunity to explore the stunning architecture and history of this world famous city. Witness Dubrovnik's rich history and discover its magnificent buildings, palaces and treasures, in the old town center, where you will find all the major sights of Dubrovnik - Rector’s Palace, Sponza Palace, Pile gate, Orlando Column and a Cathedral of the Assumption that was built on the site of a 7th-century basilica. Dubrovnik's original cathedral was enlarged in the 12th century, supposedly funded by a gift from England’s King Richard I, the Lionheart, who was saved from a shipwreck on the nearby island of Lokrum. In Franciscan Monastery is settled the third-oldest functioning pharmacy in Europe, which has been in business since 1391. It may have been the first pharmacy in Europe open to the general public. Also, there is a small museum with a collection of relics and liturgical objects, including chalices, paintings, gold jewelry and pharmacy items such as laboratory gear and medical books. Afterwards you can visit the old harbor and enjoy the atmosphere. Read more

Trip to Kotor Bay

Spend this day touring through fascinating Kotor Bay. These captivating surroundings abound with stunning landscapes, architecture and heritage, harmonically integrated to the natural beauties of the high steep mountains. That harmony of nature and history has been identified as World Heritage, so the whole bay is under their protection for its outstanding value. In this abundance of picturesque places, probably the most interesting is old Town Kotor, an ancient town with a great number of churches, cathedrals, palaces, and museums where the Kotor history, culture, and tradition are being preserved. The tour takes you eastwards through Konavle valley all the way up to Montenegro border, about an hour from Dubrovnik. The picturesque coastal road winds its way below the steep mountains and inside the bay, passing through towns of Risan and Perast towards Kotor. Enjoying the stunning landscapes we will arrive in Perast to take a boat ride to the Lady of Rock, a small artificial island in Kotor bay. It was made by seaman from Perast and Kotor who have built a church on the rock, thus fulfilling a vow they gave after a shipwreck. Even today, tradition of bringing in the stones is kept on every July 22, on an event, so called Fasinada. Next thing to do is an orientation tour in Kotor. Unlike to Dubrovnik, you will see that this whole town was built like a maze inside its Venetian walls. Inevitable landmark that you are going to visit is the 12th century St Typhoon’s Cathedral and a Maritime Museum where are hidden memories on those long gone sailing periods of history. To make a proper closure of this day, we will drive up from Kotor to take some photo opportunities and take you later to an authentic local family owned restaurant, where you will have a proper domestic lunch. Upon return to your hotel, the rest of the evening you can spent in leisure. Read more

Dubrovnik-Ston-Mostar-Split

Today, parting from Dubrovnik, we set of towards Split stopping along our way in Ston and Mostar. Ston is mostly known for three landmarks; one of the oldest salt works in Europe, famous Ston Wall and many oyster farms stretching along Bay of Ston. Less than 100 kilometres, but two border crossings away lies the city of Mostar, Bosnian jewel. It is on this day that one can learn how much diverse and beautiful can life be in this part of Europe. We will explore this charming and sad town settled on Neretva River, today formerly one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Bosnia. It belongs to one of the world`s divided cities, with Neretva river drawing the line between eastern oriental and the western culture. The most attractive part of Mostar is around the old bridge and its eastern part. To the contrast of Dubrovnik, this tour offers to experience the bigger picture and immerse deeper into the local secrets. Once arrived, accompanied with expert guide, you will explore and admire Kujundžiluk – the old bazaar, the oldest part of the city where one can still witness old crafts of hand copper working and carpet weaving. In the middle, the spiritual icon of the town – The Old Bridge, built between 1557 and 1566 by a student and apprentice of the Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan. Even though destroyed by Croat forces in bombardment during the recent civil war, its structure was laboriously reconstructed using some of its original pieces recovered from the Neretva River. It is now enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage Site, as an exceptional symbol of coexistence of communities from diverse cultural ethnic and religious backgrounds. Afterwards, we will have some free time to seek and pursue exquisite smells of traditional Bosnian cuisine along the Avlije – alleys. Common culinary delights of Mostar are ćevapčići – (typical meal of grilled veal/lamb meat dumplings with spices) and burek (veal/lamb meat-filled pastry) or sirnica and zeljanica - (cheese/chard filled pastry). Our lunch we will have in a place that truly projects local traditions and enjoys excellent reputation when it comes to originality of Bosnian food. After some leisure time and traditional Bosnian coffee, we will continue our way to Split, making a couple of short stops to stretch our legs and enjoy the view. Once arrived and checked in to your apartment, you will be able to refresh yourselves and spend your time at leisure. Our guide will make sure you are well informed on how to eventually spend your evening if you feel like going out. Read more

Split

Today we decided to leave you enough time for relaxation and independence, at the same time giving you our driver/guide on disposal. Depending on where you choose to stay, we will further amend the program. Certainly, on this day we will, at the very least, have a guided tour of Split in the evening. Split is not only the city, it is a living monument of the ancient architecture intertwined with the early Christian, Byzantine and Medieval art. It is under the UNESCO protection from 1979. The city was founded as a spacious Roman palace near metropolis Salona, and was built by a charismatic Roman Emperor Diocletian as his retirement residence. It was also a place of pagan worship, with the Emperor Diocletian’s mausoleum, which ironically, was transformed into one of the first cathedrals in the world – St .Duje, the saint patron of Split. The people of Split refer the city as the most beautiful town in the world, so our goal is to show it to you in its entirety, so you could be the judge of that. One more thing not to be missed is having coffee at Riva – waterfront promenade in front of Diocletian`s Palace. After some leisure time, if you feel like ready to escape the hustle and bustle of Croatia's second largest city, it might be nice to spend time in nature and enjoy in picturesque scenery. In that sense, a good idea would be visiting Marjan peninsula, which is favorite resting, and family bonding place for most citizens. The peninsula is home to several points of interest, including the remains of a 16th-century Jewish cemetery, hermitages and chapels from the 13th and 14th centuries. Eventually, a set of steps leads up to Telegrin, which at 178m, is the highest point on the peninsula. The islands of Brač, Hvar and Šolta can be seen and, on particularly clear days, you can see as far as the island of Vis. If you feel like trying the temperature of the sea, we could take you to Kašjuni beach for swimming in pristine Adriatic. An afternoon of sightseeing and swimming should be finished just as the locals would do it, with a drink at coffee bar which overlooks the city. With sunset approaching, we will start a walking tour of the Diocletian`s Palace and historical core of Split. The Imperial cellars, a Peristyle, picturesque streets and squares, temples, sphinxes, fruit market, medieval palaces and the fish market; vivid pulse of the city will embrace your perception. It is a beautiful picture and pleasant melody, engraved into the hearts of its citizens. Read more

Island of Brač

In Croatia, every island is a story for himself. People are talking in different vernacular and the island`s main product is not the same. The reason for that is probably due to long isolation periods throughout history. Today you are going to meet our favorite, “hardworking” island, famous for its stone and lamb – the Island of Brač. Upon arrival of your driver/guide, you will take a shortest drive to the ferry port and 50-minute ferry ride afterwards. The specificity of this island, apart from its stony surface, lamb and red wine, is also in its height above sea level. Therefore, we will immediately head for the highest point to gaze upon Central Dalmatian waters. Following the panorama is a visit to an abandoned shepherd’s village that still bears witness of the life that is slowly fading. Continuing down the picturesque winding road, we will arrive in Bol where a famous Golden Horn beach is situated. Off course that we will take the opportunity and try to swim, if the weather allows. Following the Golden Horn, we will climb back on the same road and stop for a lunch at our favorite family estate. Our host and owner is family`s menu creator and a passionate vegetable grower. They will prepare for us a famous Croatian dish, “Peka”. Peka is a metal bell used to cover whatever someone is preparing. Hot charcoal goes on top, so the food gets baked and cooked at the same time, leaving the flavor of wood you are using for burning. All that merges in a special peka dish. Usually, peka is made with veal, octopus or lamb. For our launch today, we are having lamb peka. Following our lunch, we shall visit a smallest and the oldest settlement on the island – Škrip. If the time allows, there are a couple of unique museums there that are worth paying a visit; The Museum of the Island of Brač, and the Olive Oil Museum. Our ferry back to Split departs at 16:30, disembarking us in Split one hour later. After we leave you at your hotel, the rest of the evening you can spent at your own will. Read more

Free day in Split

This day is completely yours to decide on what to do. Whether you like exploring the scenic streets of Split, or maybe exploring its rich surroundings; you have your driver/guide and comfortable vehicle on disposal, so we can always climb on a nearby mountain or explore many interesting sites around Split. What we would recommend is a nice evening walk among the ruins of Ancient Salona, finishing with a nice dinner scenic restaurant near the sea. We will not include dinner in this program, leaving it as optional, like the tour to Blue Cave & Vis Island. Read more

Split-Zadar-Plitvice-Zagreb

It is time to part with Split and start our way deep inland, back towards the Croatian capital - city of Zagreb. However, not before we explore places on our way. First on our path is Zadar, one very intriguing city. With its exceptional history and cultural heritage, it is a city-monument. In addition, Zadar is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Croatia, situated on the Adriatic Sea. It is an historic old town of Roman ruins, medieval churches, cosmopolitan cafes and quality museums, and all that settled on a small peninsula. There are many monuments and attractions to visit in Zadar, but definitely two the most fascinating of them are products of modern architecture - Sun Salutation and Sea Organ that produces beautiful melody similar to Klapa music, traditional Dalmatian a cappella singing. Continuing our journey, we will leave miraculous Dalmatia region and climb the mighty Velebit Mountain, a barrier between the sea and Croatian inland. Shortly after, we will reach Plitvice Lakes entrance and commence our tour along the panoramic pathways around the lakes. According to our experience, this is one of the best ways to experience the lakes, because of large groups of tourists that overcrowd the place, disrupting your concentration and enjoyment in whole experience. Moreover, we shall avoid hard and steep climb back to the exit, thus saving huge amounts of energy. National Park Plitvice Lakes is one of the oldest national parks in Southeastern Europe and the largest national park in Croatia. It was founded in 1949, and in 1979 was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register among the first natural sites worldwide. This wonder of nature consists of 16 lakes and makes a unique natural phenomenon, both for its geo-morphological composition and for a large number of endemic species. Upon finish of our tour, we shall have a 5-minute drive to our place for rest and lunch – noted restaurant that offers an excellent choice of Croatian specialties to choose from, whether you like European or more local dishes such as lamb on a spit and trout. Following our lunch is a 2-hour drive to Zagreb, where you will be staying at hotel situated at the city center. Read more

Zagreb

Zagreb is a central European cultural city overflowing with places of interest such as the Croatian National Theatre, the Art Pavilion, the Academy of Science and Arts, the University library, museums and galleries, as well as carefully maintained parks and gardens. Take the opportunity to stroll around the streets still lit by the original 19 century gas lamps, take pictures of the flower sellers at Jelačić square or make a wish at Stone Gate or Saint Mark's church with its multicolour roof. Enjoy driving with our guide through picturesque city streets that reflect hectic and slow-paced lifestyle at the same time. We will take you to Upper Town or locally called Grič or Gradec, one of two historic settlements of Zagreb. Accompanied by our guide, you will enjoy the charm of the historic urban nucleus witnessing many curiosities of the city. Descending the only preserved medieval gate and crossing vivid Tkalčićeva Street, you will stretch your legs a bit, mingling with locals on Dolac market and paying a visit to Cathedral and Kaptol, the canonical settlement opposite to Gradec. Just after the bell on the Cathedral rings for noon, our guide will drive you back to the hotel. To make a proper closure of this unique trip, we booked a special farewell dinner at one of the most famous restaurant in Zagreb. Opened in 1986, as a small French type of restaurant, it has immediately took an important place in the everyday life of the capital. Sophisticated art deco heritage combined with bistro classics, seasonal local produce, legendary štrukli and relaxed atmosphere make this an ideal place for daily encounters with coffee, cake or traditional Croatian cuisine with Parisian panache. Allow us to welcome you to an effortlessly-stylish eatery in an unforgettable setting. Read more

Rob at Ventula Travel is incredible - he is detail oriented, organized, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a terrific vacation when my husband and I visited Croatia! He even noticed and remembered that my husband had a birthday while we were visiting and made sure to drop off some wine and dessert for us to celebrate! All the travel arrangements were seamless, punctual and very thought out/considerate. Our off the beaten track tours to an ancient water mill, an olive oil tasting and sea kayak tours were perfect! Just what we had asked for. We will definitely recommend any one to make use of this hidden gem of a travel agency for the best travel experience in Croatia! Read more

My experience with Ventula Travel was easily one of the best I have had whilst travelling. As a student of archaeology, the excavations at ancient Siculi gave me practical experience in the field with a team of friendly people, and the added bonus of being right next to the beach! The days at the site were physically demanding, but also incredibly rewarding; there is truly nothing like watching a 2000 year old amphora emerge from the earth! As it was my first time at a dig, the local archaeologists running the site, Dijana and Ivan, were very helpful and patient in answering all my questions, making the experience that much more educational. The excursions in the afternoons and on the weekends really allowed us to experience what the region has to offer. Croatia is so much more complex and diverse than I had every imagined in terms of culture, history and food. The excursions allowed us to experience all sorts of aspects of this heritage, from prehistoric sites and Roman Salona and Split, to stunning medieval Trogir, regions of the hinterland and the Alka Museum at Sinj, to name just a few. The personal service and guiding on this tour was also exceptional; after being delayed for 5 hours on arrival, I was still met by Robbie with a friendly face and an enthusiastic welcome (despite it being 1am!). The quality of the guiding was also excellent; Robbie has a superb knowledge of the region and its history, and was always thinking of ways to make our time in Croatia more enjoyable. He even managed to organise a last minute trip to the Augusteum at Narona, which for me was a dream come true. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone with an interest in archaeology or history in general. Croatia's Roman past is fascinating, and the opportunity to dig incredible, but this is only the tip of the iceberg. Great coffee, pizza and prosciutto await you, as do historic sites from the prehistoric to the modern, and all with some of the most friendly people in the world to guide you through it. Read more

Croatia should be in the list of every avid traveller. It has a rich history, art heritage, diverse culture and has varied gastronomical delights. Our group was lucky to have found Ventula Travel to create this tour for us. From the moment Robert Bralić submitted his initial proposal for a customized tour of Croatia for 11 days for a group of 6, we knew that his version stood out from the other 3 companies we asked to submit proposals. Apart from the usual tourist destinations, Robert incorporated unique experiences that only a learned and passionate local guide would know about. It was actually a risk on his part to depart from the usual tour packages. offered a package to a group he hardly knows would welcome such off the beaten tracks. And as such, while the likes of Dubrovnik, Diocletian Palace, Dalmatian Islands tour, Plitviče Lakes would top the list of a regular tourist's experience in Croatia, our group would forever remember the moments we had cruising the Nretva river in a traditional boat, getting to know the family that owns a Medieval watermill (that still operates) and being served local cuisine; being served ancient cuisine while getting educated on olive oil in a historic site, having fun following a dog hunting for truffles, listening to an energetic local entrepreneur in his quest to get a trade patent to protect his strudel recipes, and many more unique encounters with locals that made our holiday truly enriching. The tour guides assigned to us were all excellent. As tour guides, being educated is our minimum expectation. We were assigned Archaeologists, art historians, educators who passionately shared with us not only what they know and learned from books but also stories from their own family experiences which makes the exchange even more meaningful. No moment was wasted with any of them as we devoured every information they were sharing with us. We got very good tips on where to eat or where to spend our free time or what to watch out for when we are walking around. While we will not retain everything that we learned about Croatia, the moments we shared with a lot of the people we met in this trip would last a lifetime. Read more
