Antigua Guatemala

We will depart very early from Antigua Guatemala to move to the City of Quetzaltenango. Upon arrival, we will start our tour in a small town called Momostenango which is the most important center of the region for its handicrafts and handmade wool products. We will visit the local market and then, share the rest of the day with a family of indigenous craftsmen who from generation to generation have inherited the art of producing carpets and blankets made by hand with organic materials. We will learn everything about this work, from how to process the raw wool, to form the threads, to dyed them naturally with plants, until we see how they weave the blankets on wood looms. We will share a typical lunch with the family and learn to make the traditional corn “tortillas”. In the afternoon, we will visit a social business called Y'abal, this company empowers indigenous women, so that they can market their tissues and therefore become small entrepreneurs. Here we will learn how to use the waist loom for the elaboration of "Huipiles" which is the traditional costume of the Guatemalan indigenous culture and visit a Museum to learn more about the subject. We will dine in a beautiful place that has a panoramic view of the city of Xela. Read more

Quetzaltenango

We will begin the day very early, and visit a lagoon called "Chicaval", this is a sacred lagoon that is located in the center of a volcano crater. Accompanied by a Mayan Spiritual Guide, we will visit the sacred sites of ceremonies around this mystical lagoon. She will explain to us about the Mayan Cosmovision and the spiritual traditions that are practiced there. We will return to Xela for a historic tram tour of the city. And to finish the day, we will receive a class to learn how to prepare chocolate in an artisan way that is a typical culinary tradition of the region. Read more

This day we will tour through several villages near Xela. Cojolá, Salcajá, San Andrés Xejul and San Cristobal, a journey full of color and tradition, we will learn about natural weaving techniques and types of looms. Finally, we will visit two colonial churches and taste the famous traditional alcoholic drink in the region “Caldo de Frutas”. Read more

In the morning, we will visit the shop and workshop of "Copavic", a cooperative of craftsmen who manufacture handmade glasses of glass with artisan techniques. Afterwards, we will arrive at the indigenous village of Zunil to visit the temple of San Simon or Maximón, a Mayan saint who is famous for smoking and drinking alcohol. Finally, we will cross a beautiful path between mountains to reach an incredible place where you can enjoy a bath in hot waters that descend from above. Its natural waters have medicinal attributes. In the morning, we will be transferred back to Antigua Guatemala. During the afternoon, you can go out and enjoy one of the most emblematic places of Guatemala, the "Very Noble and Very Loyal City of Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala", commonly known as "Antigua Guatemala". This city was named as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Read more
