You will be met at Hosea Kutako Airport by the vehicle hire company and transferred to their offices in Windhoek for the vehicle handover, beginning your self drive Namibia tour. Depart from Windhoek after breakfast and travel along scenic roads and passes to Sesriem just outside the Namib Naukluft National Park and gateway to some of the highest sand dunes in the world. If time permits, you can visit the Sesriem Canyon near the gate of the park. Or enjoy a local activity at your lodge, after which you will get ready for the next day to explore Sossusvlei. Read more
We recommend an early departure to catch the spectacular dawn lighting at Dune 45. Then you continue your self drive Namibia tour deeper into the Namib Naukluft Park to explore Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. And if you are feeling adventurous, try climbing the immense dunes - no easy feat!
Your self drive Namibia tour continues north with a must stop at Solitaire for a refuel - and of course, a taste of the famous apple pie! Then cross the the Gaub and Kuiseb Passes and continue via Ganab and Tinkas through spectacular scenery to the C28 (you will need to get a permit at Sesriem before departure). If time permits, you can take a small detour to admire the ancient Welwitschia plants and Moon Landscape before continuing on to the quaint coastal town of Swakopmund. We highly recommend the morning 4 - 4.5 hour seal and dolphin boat or catamaran cruise. This is an unforgettable experience on excellent boats/catamarans and can also be enjoyed in combination with a 4x4 excursion to Sandwich Harbour. Another excellent morning activity is the “Living Desert Tour” which explores the “Little 5” in the dunes just south of Swakopmund. The tour lasts about 4.5 – 5 hours. Other great activities, depending on your interests, are quadbiking, sandboarding tandem skydiving, cultural tours, and more. For the afternoon we suggest a leisurely stroll through town and perhaps some souvenir shopping. Read more
Depart Swakopmund to continue your self drive Namibia tour and head up the Skeleton coast to visit the Cape Cross Seal Colony (if desired). Then continue inland to the Twyfelfontein area. Visit the rock engravings, a UNESCO world heritage site, in the late afternoon or early the next morning to catch the best lighting for photos, after which you will head to visit Grootberg pass. Your self drive Namibia tour continues a short way north to either the Palmwag Concession or up to visit Grootberg Pass. Both areas offer the chance of seeing the desert adapted animals such as elephant, rhino, giraffe and lion. We recommend a guided afternoon activity.
After you went to visit Grootberg pass, head to Kamanjab and then north towards the westernmost gate of the Etosha National Park, Galton Gate. Overnight nearby in the beautiful Hobatere Concession are with its rich diveristy of game.
This area offers a huge variety of game such as Hartmann’s Zebra, giraffe, lion, elephant etc. Hobatere Lodge offers game drives during the day and at night, as well as guided walks. Or simply relax at one of the hides near the pool or at the nearby waterhole.
Enter the Etosha National Park via Galton Gate and continue your self drive Namibia tour via Otjovasandu and Dolomietpunt to the rest camp, Okaukuejo. Here you have a good chance to see black rhino and other game at the waterhole. Exit the park before sundown at Andersson Gate and check in at nearby accomodation. Read more
Plan a leisurely game drive from waterhole to waterhole through eastern Etosha. Lunch at Halali, then head back to exit at Anderssons Gate before sundown.
The journey heads southeast via Otjiwarongo to the Waterberg Plateau area.
After a morning hike to the plateau, the last leg of the highlights tour takes you to the Okonjima Private Game Reserve, home of the AfriCat Foundation.
After a leisurely breakfast with your hosts, head back to Windhoek to return the hire vehicle. You will then be transferred to the airport in time for your return flight home.
