This small and charming village (I mean small and charming) is located in the heart of Picos de Europa in Cantabria. The Picos de Europa National Park was the first one to be awarded that designation in Spain. Here it is time to relax and hike and eat and enjoy and relax. Did I say relax? You will overnight in a boutique and family-run hotel made of wood and stone. It offers high quality service and great food. All workers are dressed with the traditional Cantabrian costume. There are plenty of routes to hike for all kind of physical conditions. The sceneries are great and if you desire it you can go to Fuente Dé, another small village 8 miles away to get the funicular that will take you to the top of the mountains to get spectacular views of the valley. A visit to the main village of the Area, Potes, is also a must. Walking through the small and narrow pedestrian streets will delight you. Read more

Asturias

Llanes has the appearance of a historic town. Not for nothing has its historic quarter been declared a Historic-Artistic Site and it preserves major examples of civil, religious and military architecture. This small coastal village full of life has the perfect location to visit both the beautiful mountains in Asturias and some of the best beaches in northern Spain. Small creeks around that have nothing to envy to the Caribbean for the color of its waters (of course not crowded at all) and some other different ones (for instance there is a beach that appears in the middle of a field only when it is up tide) can be found in the area. The village is full of small cider houses where the traditional local drink, the cider, is poured in the traditional way. You place the bottle over your head and let the cider fall to crash against a glass placed under your hip. Local food is fantastic and cheap, from the most traditional "fabada" (stew of white beans with bacon, chorizo and black pudding, to the renowned "cachopo" (a giant breaded fillet steak filled with ham and cheese). Also great fish, shellfish and meat can be found in Asturias. Read more

On the shores of the Cantabrian Sea, Gijón offers an attractive combination of maritime tradition, monumental heritage and modern urban planning right on the seashore. Its marina is a testament to its close links with the sea throughout its history. It was shortlisted in the European Commission's EDEN programme (European Destinations of Excellence), in recognition of its sustainable tourism proposal. The historic quarter of Gijón is formed by the hill of Santa Catalina and the fishing neighbourhood of Cimadevilla. The first settlers established communities on top of this hill and it has been chosen as the site for the “Elogio del Horizonte” (Eulogy of the Horizon), a monumental work by the Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida. We'll have a tour to Las Médulas and Astorga. For lunch you'll be taken to a small pedestrian village to taste the most traditional meal in Leon, the Cocido, a stew of three courses including different kinds of meats, peas and cabbage and soup. Las Medulas: This small mountain town marks the natural beginning of the ascent towards Las Médulas, a unique cultural landscape that was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO. The two centuries that this type of mining went on, caused the formation of the peculiar relieve of Las Médulas. Red-clay erosion gullies, towers, and underground galleries, all surrounded by chestnut trees, make up this cultural landscape. Peaks higher than 100 metres lead to the centre of the gold mine, the Cueva Encantada (Enchanted Cave) and Cuevona (the Huge Cave). Astorga: The capital of the county of Maragatería in the province of León offers a rich medieval legacy, the result of its location at the crossroads of: the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela and the Ruta de la Plata (Silver Road). Its walled town preserves churches, convents and hospitals which take travellers back to the purest tradition of the Pilgrim's Road. Another outstanding feature in the town's streets is a culminating work by the Modernist architect Antoni Gaudí: the Bishop's Palace. Astorga is, also, a good opportunity for enjoying the rich cuisine of this area. Read more

Luis helped my family plan an amazing family vacation to the Basque region of Spain. Luis was incredibly patient and informative during the planning process. He was spot on with his recommendations and the trip was planned perfectly and was everything we had hoped for.

Great time in Northern Spain, thanks to Luis and his detailed, professional, and friendly service. We were four seniors out for good food, wine, hiking, art, and "hidden" places. Luis surpassed our expectations, arranging all lodging and local transportation, including private drivers to take us to the out-of-the-way places. And all for a reasonable cost. Northern Spain is beautiful, and we were happy to have experienced its geographical and cultural diversity with Luis' guidance via all the information in his complete "personal guide book" he creates for his clients.
