Today you drive to the famous Tham Jang Caves, once used by the local people as a hideout from Chinese invaders. They are considered sacred by the Lao people and popular largely due to the lagoon in the cave. The beautiful green-blue waters are perfect for a dip after the stiff climb. The main cave chamber contains a Thai bronze ¬reclining Buddha, and from here deeper galleries branch off into the mountain. To get there, travel on a scenic but unpaved road to the village of Ban Na Thong. From Ban Na Thong follow the signs towards the cliff and climb a steep 200m through scrub forest. Afterwards you continue on to Wat Sisaket, the city's oldest temple. Dating back to 1818, Wat Sisaket is the most important heritage temple now standing in Laos. It houses thousands of Buddha images from many countries, long lost architectural styles, sculptures and paintings. Wat Prakeo, the former royal temple of the Lao monarchy, originally built in 1565, is home to the Emerald Buddha image and Buddhist sculptures are displayed along the perimeter wall, including a 6th to 9th century Dvaravati-style stone Buddha and several standing and sitting Buddhas. En route to Lao’s national icon, That LuangStupa, stop at the Patuxay Monument, an irresistibly photogenic structure which is known as Vientiane’s Arc de Triomphe This afternoon, you see the Buddha Park, a scattered and enchanting collection of Buddhist and Hindu sculptures on the Mekong Riverside, close to the Friendship Bridge. There are approximately 200 religious images dating back over 500 years, which were created by a mysterious monk spreading his philosophy on life and his ideas about the universe.
