Smiles & Volcanoes (14 days)

Smiles & Volcanoes (14 days)

Java is unlike any other tropical island in the world. Heir to an art and a history that interferes with the supernatural like its holy temples, this island shines through a landscape of rice fields dominated by a hundred volcanic cones, as beneficial as destructive. You will then walk on the Balinese land, at the rhythm of gentle strolls and through fabulous landscapes of rice terraces, traditional villages and sacred temples

Welcome to Indonesia

Welcome at Yogyakarta airport by your tour-guide and transfer to your hotel. The rest of the day is free. In the evening, welcome dinner, the opportunity to get to know your accompanying team.

Yogyakarta, 3 nights

Yogyakarta, Cultural Capital City

The morning is devoted to the visit of Yogyakarta, the cultural capital of Java, and particularly the surroundings of the Sultan's Palace built in 1756. Your city walk takes you to Taman Sari, known in the days of the Dutch colonial empire as the "Water Palace", and then to the puppet and batik workshops. In the late morning, you’ll head to the Ratu Boko temple, perched on the hills of Gunung Kidul overlooking the plain of Prambanan. You’ll then begin a short hike to the Hindu temple of Prambanan, through forest, traditional villages and rice fields. You’ll then visit the Prambanan temple complex and especially Loro Jonggrang, a lavish 47-meter high temple dedicated to the goddess Siva. It is considered́ as the most elegant and stunning Hindu temple on the island of Java. Optional: you may attend the Ramayana show. Return to the hotel in early or mid-evening. Read more

Yogyakarta, 3 nights

Rice Fields of Java and Borobudur Temple

In the early morning, transfer to the banks of the Kulon Progo river, where you will have a pleasant countryside start in a small Javanese village, from where you will discover the surrounding nature by (Dutch) bicycle. You will indeed discover the Javanese countryside in a gentle way, and you will make some stops in the surrounding villages, where you will have the possibility to observe the local handicraft work. In the middle of the afternoon, transfer to the Borobudur temple. Return to the hotel in the early evening. Read more

Yogyakarta, 3 nights

Last Stronghold of Hinduism

Morning transfer to the Sukuh temple, the last stronghold of Hinduism in Central Java in the face of the spread of Islam. This temple presents an original iconography, such as phallic figures and large tables in the shape of turtles, which would reveal the existence of initiation rituals, even orgiastic. Then you’ll start a walk towards the village of Tawangmangu, on the slopes of the Lawu volcano. This walk is an opportunity not only to discover some plant species but also to admire superb panoramas on the pine forest and the surrounding high altitude plantations. You’ll end your walk by crossing the park of Tawangmangu, which leads you to a superb waterfall (Grojogan Sewu) in the middle of a tropical forest inhabited by a large community of monkeys. In the afternoon, transfer to Tumpang, near Malang, at the western foot of the Bromo-Tengger-Semeru massif. Read more

Tumpang, 2 nights

Magnificent Landscapes

Early departure to the Lumajang area, bypassing the southern flanks of the majestic Semeru volcano. You’ll then reach the waterfall of Tumpak Sewu ("Thousand waterfalls" in Javanese). As you descend into the gorge (by a slippery and sometimes steep path), you will indeed feel the force of these hundreds of streams that beat the drum as they "plunge" over 100m. Seen from above, the beauty of this waterfall seems ephemeral as the fine mist soaks everything in its path. No wonder that a photo of Tumpak Sewu with Mt. Semeru in the background was awarded as "Best Aerial Shot" in 2019. And, if you're also taking your camera equipment, remember to protect it from moisture. Return to Tumpang in the late afternoon. Tumpang, 2 nights

Spectacular M Bromo Caldera

In the early morning, 4wd vehicles take you to the Tengger region, where the famous Mt Bromo (2,329 m) spits out its volutes, and the caldera that surrounds it forms a gigantic sea of sand. During this trip, you will cross the amazing forest of the Tengger-Bromo-Semeru National Park, also following part of the crest of the Bromo volcano caldera, before descending to the sea of sand to reach the village of Cemorolawang (located on one of the opposite ridges). Mt. Bromo is the most revered́ of the Hindu Tengger people who live in the area. You’ll climb the Bromo volcano in the early afternoon. You will be able to admire its crater that resembles a steaming cauldron. It is easy to understand why the Javanese once considered this place as the entrance to purgatory. Then you’ll reach the top of Mount Pananjakan (2,775m) to witness a fabulous show. You’ll attend the sunset in a lunar setting, with a breath-taking view of Mount Bromo, its sea of sand, and the volcano Semeru, both letting out thick fumaroles. Unique! Return to the hotel in the early evening. Read more

Bromo, 1 night

East of Java

These carriers transport nearly 80 kg of ore on their backs for about 15 km to the processing plant! You will then witness the weighing and the different work contracts. This will leave you a very strong and striking image of your trip. In the late morning, transfer to Pemuteran, a small seaside resort located on the northwest coast of Bali, far from the concentrations of tourists. Read more
