After breakfast, check out and leave for Ubon Ratchathani. Visit Surin Elephant Village. Many of the locals here at Ban Ta Klang Elephant Village are of the Suay ethnic minority. They are skilled in capturing, training and raising Asian elephants, a national Thai symbol. Unlike in northern Thailand where elephants are kept for labor, locals consider elephants their companions, and often share their homes with them. Visitors to the village can observe the way of life of the Suay people, or speak with veteran elephant specialists. Often, the sluggish local economy drives elephants and their mahouts to work outside the village. Rice paddies and forests, good elephant habitats, surround the village. Further to the weaving village, Chansoma Golden Brocade is located at Tambol Ta Sawang, Amphur Muang Surin, Baan Ta Sawang. It is named “the village with 1,460 heddles” during the time the villagers weave a golden brocade and present to the Queen. This handicraft is initiated the “Chan Soma”, a group of people with the high value weaving skill. The leader of this group gathers the villagers who are normally farmers to make a living on their free time. They combine the local pattern with the technique of the Royal Court and turn it into a unique pattern that becomes popular worldwide. Move on to visit the villages, specialize in fine silverware. Later, go to visit an unseen temple of millions bottle, a remarkable site, made with million of colorful glass bottles donated by residents of the province. The architecture is beautiful, particularly the pavilion called Sala Thansamo Maha Chedi Kaeo (a chapel) located in the heart of a nearby pond. The chapel houses a very beautiful white jade Buddha image. Lunch will be made on the way at local restaurant. After noon, proceed to Ubon Ratchathani city center, visit Wat Thung Srimuang, it was constructed during the reign of King Rama III (1824-1851) to houses a replica of Buddha’s footprint. Aside from that, the most beautiful structure in the temple is perhaps the wooden Tripitaka Library (Ho Trai) that was designed to sit on the stilts in the middle of the pool to prevent the materials from insects (ants and termites). The architecture here is a mixture of Laos and rattankosin styles (Rattanakosin refers to the era after 1782, when Bangkok was the capital of Thailand).
